Committees – Texas A&M Student Senate

Rules and Regulations Committee

The Rules and Regulations committee is assigned all legislation and matters involving the SGA code. Throughout the session, the committee is responsible for facilitating the process of filling vacancies and developing senators’ knowledge of parliamentary procedure. In this upcoming session, this committee will also participate in the strategic reformatting and revision of the SGA Code.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee seeks to maximize the impact of SGA through the disbursement of the SGA Annual Allocation. The committee presides over the process which allocates $75,000 among each of the 15 SGA Committees, 4 Commissions, and 3 Branches at the beginning of each academic year. The Committee also oversees the reallocation process of those funds throughout the year and ensures that money is being spent responsibly and effectively.

Student Services Committee

The Student Services is assigned to consider all legislation pertaining to interactions between the Student Government Association and the administration of Texas A&M University as it pertains to student service issues. This committee works very closely to help solve and improve services that Texas A&M University provides from transportation, parking, dining services, etc.

Academic Affairs Committee

Academic Affairs is the legislative arm of SGA that coordinates all academic issues between the student body and the administration of Texas A&M University. All academic policy regarding tuition, class registration, class sizes, textbooks, grades, scholarships, credit transfer, core curriculum, etc. is formulated in Academic Affairs. The Academic Affairs Committee works closely with the Provost’s Office, Faculty Senate, Graduate & Professional Student Government, Texas A&M University Libraries, individual college administrators, and many others to further student’s interests. The Academic Affairs Committee also reviews and approves all student applicants to be members of the Texas A&M Honor Council.

Community Relations Committee

Community Relations considers all legislation pertaining to interactions between SGA and the local government, as well as legislation pertaining to issues of community relations, outreach, and student involvement in local issues. This includes outreach, networking, working on local issues that impact Texas A&M students, and relentless collaboration to cultivate a strong relationship between Texas A&M and the communities it resides in.

Legislative Relations Committee

The Legislative Relations Committee serves to write and consider legislation concerning the Legislative Relations Commission’s advocacy in Austin and Washington DC to legislators. They work with local and state officials to help advocate for the student’s voice within our national, state, and local government.

Constituency Affairs Committee

The Constituency Affairs Committee is a little different from the other committees in the Student Senate, as it focuses on student interaction instead of legislation. The committee reaches out to students, collects opinions, and reports back to the Senate. The committee operates to get more students involved with Student Senate, get more students outside of Senate to write resolutions, creating list-serves, and hosting a variety of events to better know students and the problems that they face.

Traditions and Culture Committees

The Traditions and Culture Committee is focused on legislation and initiatives meant to bolster the culture, traditions, and community experience of students at Texas A&M. They are responsible for recognition of various cultural and community events and the traditions of Texas A&M, such as Muster and Silver Taps.

Operations Committee

The Operations Committee exists to operate the Student Senate on a functional level. The Operations Committee works closely with the Speaker Pro-Tempore and Executive Director of Operations to set up meetings, manage legislation, document Senate Archives, maintain IT, and supervise social media accounts. This committee is the backbone of the entire senate, ensuring smooth operations and allowing other officer and senators to focus on legislative priorities.
